What More Can A Girl Ask For?
I will probably never get married. I know, “never say never”, but I think in this case it’s a safe bet. It’s not that I haven’t been asked. I have…more than once too. But I never felt the urge to get married and still don’t. Now that has been established, how come no one believes me?
Some people think that everyone wants to be married and if you’re not, then you must be unhappy. They just can’t understand someone like me who is perfectly happy as she is. No matter what I say to them, they just don’t buy it. Last week someone asked me, “Paula, do you ever plan to get married?” (“Ever” is always stressed here) This time I answered, “Sure, June 6, 2044.” (I think if you have to get married then 79 is a good age and June is supposed to be the month for weddings, right?)
As you get older and remain single, people feel more obligated to set you up with a man…any man. Like you could die any moment and never experience the joy of happily-ever-after. Apparently at my stage in life, I am no longer allowed any standards or something. Everyone wants get in the act too like my son who tried to set me up with a friend’s Dad because he had a “cool muscle car”, a neighbor who tried to set me up with her brother who I “needed” to call because he was on a work-release program and was in jail by night (“But he is real nice and he needs a nice lady like you in his life, Paula”), a girlfriend who tried to set me up with this “Greek God”, sure he has plenty of pecs but his being light in the loafers should of clued her in, and one sister at church “Well he might be a little too old for you (try 40 something years older) but he’s is a real sweet Christian man.” (Hey I said that getting married at 79 would be okay, not that I wanted to marry someone who is 79.)
I know people mean well and it really doesn’t bother me. It is actually amusing and I like meeting new people. But I had to draw the line, when my Dad tried to set me up with this guy (who lives down his street in another state.). “Paula I know this nice man but he has a metal plate in his head. Don’t worry it doesn’t bother him and you can tell. It’s pretty neat though because he sticks magnets on it and I think he can get satellite radio. I know you are picky, Paula. But this guy has his own teeth AND owns his own truck.”
